Meteorologist Sven Plöger sets off again to survey the future of our weather. His destination for the third episode of the ARD series: the Mediterranean – a place of longing, a vacation destination. And a hotspot of climate change.
The winds of the “mare nostrum” shape the weather here. They cause foehn weather conditions on the edge of the Alps, send us rain via the foothills of an “exact low” or carry Saharan dust to the north. But with global warming, the Mediterranean weather and wind system seems to be getting out of balance. More and more frequently, shocking reports are coming from the south: of unbearable heat, forest fires, storms and flooding.
Sven Plöger investigates this development and accompanies a research team on an oceanographic expedition off the coast of Nice. Will the Mediterranean soon turn from a place of longing into a place of destiny for Europe?
