Germany is a country rich in water – actually. It is estimated that there are 176 billion m3 of water reserves that are renewed and can be used every year. But it is not only since the drought years starting in 2018 that groundwater resources have been declining. Even in the rainy months of 2023, the deficit could not be made up. How critical is the situation in Germany? Science journalist Kai Kupferschmidt went in search of facts.
