In the USA, a new president or, for the first time, a female president will be elected in a few weeks’ time. A botched presidential debate, two assassination attempts on Donald Trump, Joe Biden’s withdrawal, Kamala Harris’ race to catch up – the election campaign is taking to extremes what has been apparent for years: an extremely heated political atmosphere with a risk of explosion. Illegal immigration is the main focus of many debates and a central topic of the election campaign. Markus Lanz and author Anabel Münstermann meet refugees, journalists, aid workers and residents on both sides of the border on their journey to the Mexican-American border region and show what it really means to leave your home behind. On his journey through the USA, Markus Lanz also meets middle-class Americans, swing voters, homeless people and political scientists, who give him and the viewers of the documentary a picture of the mood in the world’s oldest democracy.
