PUR+: THE MYSTERIES OF MIGRATORY BIRDS

Every year, 20 billion birds migrate to southern Europe. But why are so few blackbirds now joining them from Germany? PUR+ presenter Eric Mayer takes to the air with German migratory birds.
Are these behavioural changes to do with climate change? In an experiment, ornithologist Prof. Martin Wikelski and Eric Mayer tag blackbirds with mini transmitters. Can their research plane locate and track the birds? Why do so many scientific mysteries still surround the stork?
PUR+ accompanies part of the pilot project ICARUS with the aim of making the invisible visible. Thanks to new types of mini transmitter which can be located by the International Space Station, the global movements of various species of animal might be able to provide us with useful information about the state of the Earth, and maybe even predict disasters.
