Of all natural catastrophes, earthquakes are the most perfidious since they usually occur without warning, destroy entire regions within seconds and cost numerous people their lives.
But it’s not earthquakes that kill people, it’s buildings. And in Istanbul quakes are especially threatening because 80 percent of all buildings have been put up illegally.
In Part 2 we examine the different forms and consequences of earthquakes. We accompany scientists as they try to find out how and where earthquakes occur, how we can protect ourselves against them, and how one day it might be possible to predict them.
