Without migration, the world as we know it today would not exist. Because when people migrate, everything migrates with them: their knowledge, culture, religion. But also genes, animals, plants and diseases. Ever since man started moving out of Africa and populating the world 70,000 years ago, there has been migration. In some centuries to a lesser extent, in others on such a massive scale – like in the era of the “great migrations” – that half the world’s population seemed to be on the move. In the 19th century alone, 50 million people emigrated to the “new world”. Today, 200 million people are looking for a new home – time to look at the historical context.
