The Industrial Revolution catapulted the world into a new phase in the 19th century. The age of mass migration had dawned, facilitated by entirely new modes of transport and communication. The railway accelerated travel across the continents. The steamship made transcontinental travel possible even for the less wealthy.
Between 1850 and 1950, about 50 million Europeans emigrated to the USA. Many were moved by the hope of more political freedom and a life without hardship and deprivation. The movements on the other continents also took on unprecedented proportions.
