Churches define the silhouette of a village or town. They are often the oldest and largest buildings. Located in central squares, they shape the identity of a place. They have been important social meeting places for centuries. 80 % of sacred buildings are listed and house unique works of art. However, church congregations are becoming smaller and smaller and many places of worship are becoming redundant. What happens to the buildings when they are no longer needed for worship? Harald Lesch and Thomas Schwartz discuss this issue.
