Love is the most powerful emotion – and heartache a force to be reckoned with. World history has seen a wealth of heartrending love stories. Many of which came to a dramatic end: Cleopatra and Marc Antony did not survive their affair, and Romeo and Juliet were fated to die together. But even when love affairs didn’t end quite so disastrously, powerful emotions have shaped the course of history, produced magnificent monuments, like the Taj Mahal, and in more recent times filled the columns of gossip magazines.
