From the Middle Ages to modern times, emperors, kings and other nobles have ruled the world – in Europe supported by the Catholic Church. They see their power over the country and its people as a birthright, even a God-given right. But the rise of the bourgeoisie began with the Renaissance at the latest, with merchants competing with the nobility and the clergy. By trading in money, they gain influence and prosperity – it’s the birth of capitalism.
