The opening episode looks at the origins of property-mindedness – from the first Neolithic farmers, through the advanced civilizations of Mesopotamia, to the empires of antiquity. The quest for more and more began when people settled down around 10,000 years ago and practiced farming and animal husbandry instead of hunting and gathering. But above all it was the Roman Empire 2,000 years ago that shaped our Western ideas of property – right up to the present day.
