At the end of the 18th century, changes started to occur in the southwest. Citizens were inspired by revolutionary France to fight for greater freedom; they became campaigners for democracy, civil liberties and human rights. In 1848, there was even an armed insurrection in Baden. The southwest was shaken by a revolution.
