Freedom – hardly any other term is so omnipresent and yet so difficult to grasp. It is a feeling that almost everyone strives for. Freedom usually refers to the ability to shape one’s own life freely and to be able to move around without restrictions. Rights are also referred to as freedoms, such as freedom of religion or freedom of expression. Today, they are regarded as the most important fundamental rights of all people, and all democratic constitutions of the modern era are based on them. The concept of freedom has changed over the centuries. But what is the state of freedom in the world today? Together with neuroscientists from the Charité in Berlin, Mirko Drotschmann explores the question of whether humans have free will or whether everything is predetermined by the laws of nature that the brain follows.
